Italian Serie A club Roma are set to terminate Konstantinos Tsimikas’ loan deal and send him back to Liverpool this January.
Tsimikas moved to Roma in the summer transfer window after he was informed that he was surplus to requirements at Liverpool. The Reds had just signed Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth in a €47 million deal. And with Andy Robertson still at the club, Tsimikas would cut a peripheral figure.
At Roma, the Greek left-back was expected to quickly become a regular under coach Gian Piero Gasperini. But things have not panned out that way. The Italian tactician has preferred players like Wesley Franca and Devyne Rensch in the wing-back positions.
Now, with the second half of the season in full swing, the club is looking to sign reinforcements to aid their Serie A title challenge and their Europa League push.
The wing-back position is one position they want to strengthen, and due to the number of players they have in that position, they have to shed some weight.
According to TMW, Roma have now decided to part ways with Tsimikas. With just 15 appearances under his belt across all competitions, they believe he is a dispensable member of the team. As such, they are willing to cut his loan short and send him back to Anfield.
With the 29-year-old Greek defender expected to return to Liverpool in the coming days, his future now hangs in the balance.
Coach Arne Slot will have to decide on whether to keep Tsimikas on the team due to the long-term injury to Bradley Cooper and Jeremie Frimpong’s persistent injury problems. With him in the team, Slot will have a decent cover at the left-back position.
Tsimikas’ contract on Merseyside expires at the end of next season, so he definitely has a lot to play for.
