Cristian Chivu issues verdict on Inter Milan’s lack of signings in the January transfer window

Inter Milan manager Cristian Chivu has revealed that he’s satisfied with his club’s lack of activity in the January transfer window, insisting the Nerazzurri did not need reinforcements.

Chivu’s side are currently missing key players, with Dutch defender Denzel Dumfries currently on the sidelines with an ankle injury he suffered back in November 2025.

The 2010 UEFA Champions League winners are also without a vital midfield duo; Hakan Calhanoglu and Nicolo Barella, who have both been sidelined with muscle injuries that occurred at different points during the January transfer window.

Despite this, Inter Milan opted against bringing in any reinforcements, with their only signing being 23-year-old French midfielder Yanis Massolin, who they immediately loaned back to Serie B side Modena.

Speaking about Inter’s lack of business in the January transfer market, Chivu dismissed any concerns, adamant that there was no need for new additions, especially with quality options from the Nerazzurri’s youth ranks at his disposal.

“You can improve a squad even without bringing in new players,” he said in quotes revealed by Football Italia.

“We tried to do something, but the January transfer market is very tricky. We had 23-24 players, but these great lads from the Under-23 side can give us a hand.

“We know who we are dealing with and the players we worked with. These are games where you need energy and fresh legs, so I chose the players who had energy.

“Don’t forget we had a busy January and will have an even busier February.

“Stefano Vecchi is doing a great job as coach of the Under-23 side, and these lads are improving, so they can be of use to us throughout the season.

“We want to be competitive, to give a sense of consistency to what has been done in recent years. We keep going with belief, hard work, good performances, always aware that we can continue to improve.”

Inter are in flying form despite their lack of signings. They recently secured a place in the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia after goals from Ange-Yoan Bonny and Andy Diouf secured a well-deserved 2-1 victory over Torino on Wednesday night.

The San Siro faithful are currently top of Serie A and have a five-point cushion over their rivals, AC Milan, after recording 18 wins, 1 draw and 4 defeats to rack up 55 points from 23 top-flight games so far.

Inter are in the Champions League as well, and Chivu will be looking forward to welcoming the likes of Dumfries, Calhanoglu and Barella back into the fold later this month as they look to keep competing on all fronts.
