Inter Milan have made initial contact with Emiliano Martínez’s camp to explore the conditions of a potential transfer from Aston Villa.
The Serie A side are considering the Argentina international as an experienced option to succeed Yann Sommer, whose contract at the San Siro ends this season. The 33-year-old remains Villa’s undisputed first-choice and a World Cup winner, having played a central role for Argentina in Qatar 2022.
As revealed in a report by Football Italia, the Nerazzurri have been monitoring Martínez since the summer, when a move to Manchester United failed to materialise. Following that, the former Arsenal goalkeeper had to re-establish himself at Villa Park last season, keeping multiple clean sheets in league and cup competitions.
Inter view Martínez as a profile that can immediately become a starter, bringing both top-flight experience and international pedigree.
Reports say Inter’s interest could lead to an offer should Villa be willing to sell, with the Premier League side said to require a replacement before allowing him to leave. The Midlands sideʼs club officials have said that any transfer must not leave the club short between the sticks.
Martínez joined Aston Villa in 2020 and has since established himself as one of the Premier League’s standout shot-stoppers. Inter’s goalkeeper department has been under review following recent evaluations of Sommer, who joined from Bayern Munich in 2023.
The club’s sporting directors are assessing both young prospects and seasoned internationals, with Martínez now emerging as a top candidate.
Martínez has made over 50 caps for Argentina, keeping nearly 40 clean sheets, and his penalty-saving record and leadership qualities strengthen his standing in transfer considerations.
