Liverpool are reportedly considering a potential move for Newcastle United midfield gem Sandro Tonali as they look to bolster Arne Slot’s options in the middle of the park.
Tonali’s stocks have continued to rise steadily since arriving at St. James’ Park from AC Milan in the summer of 2023, with the Italian star firmly establishing himself as one of Eddie Howe’s most trusted soldiers in a relatively successful period for Newcastle United.
In two and a half seasons with the Magpies, Tonali has amassed 87 appearances across all competitions while registering 14 goal contributions. He has also been one of the Premier League’s best performing midfielders within that period.
This impressive level of consistency has put the Italy international on the radar of Premier League champions Liverpool according to Fichajes. The Reds are looking to strengthen that central area of the pitch where they currently lack a strong profile.
Reports indicate that Liverpool believe Tonali, a player they have monitored since his early days at Brescia, is the perfect candidate to provide some steel in the middle of the park while also being able to dictate the tempo of games and break into the box with those timely late runs.
However, a potential move could prove difficult with the Italian under contract at Newcastle United until the summer of 2028. This gives the Magpies the upper hand in case of negotiations and it is understood that they will demand no less than £100 million to sanction the departure of their prized asset.
Liverpool also face competition for Tonali’s signature from outside the Premier League, with Serie A giants Juventus reportedly keen on the 26-year-old as well.
The Bianconeri, based in the Italian top flight, would offer the allure of a return to his home country and that could potentially weigh quite heavily if the player ends up having to make a choice.
