Seven-time UEFA Champions League winners AC Milan are looking to boost their chances of winning the Serie A by signing a midfielder from Bayern Munic.
The Rossoneri are just three points off top spot in the Italian top-flight, and are looking to bring in reinforcements to help seal the Scudetto after they finished in 8th place last season.
As per Get Football Italy, Massimiliano Allegri’s men have rekindled their interest in Leon Goretzka in a bid to help shore up their midfield depth. They were in talks with the German last summer but nothing concrete materialised.
According to the report, internal talks have taken place within the Milan hierarchy and building on that, the 19-time Italian Champions are looking to test the waters with the former Schalke 04 midfielder. Goretzka’s physicality, particularly, is what sets him apart from Milan’s other targets.
While there’s interest from both parties, the deal might take a while to come to fruition, due to Goretzka’s wages. The 30-year-old currently earns €250,000 (€13m per annum), which is more than Milan’s highest earner – Christopher Nkunku (€178,000 per week, €9.26m per annum).
Financing such a deal would require a significant effort from the club, one that might be considered over the top for a loan deal, but Goretzka could be willing to compromise to make the transfer happen.
Under Vincent Kompany, he’s become a rotational player, with Joshua Kimmich and Pavlovic nailing down starting spots in the Belgian’s midfield pivot. As such, a move abroad, especially after winning every club trophy with the Bavarians appeals to the versatile midfielder.
Despite the financial hurdle, Milan are looking to launch a bid in the coming weeks, and Bayern’s response to their offer will determine if a transfer will materialise.
Should a loan deal fail to happen, Allegri’s men have the luxury of waiting till the summer when Goretzka will become a free agent as Bayern have confirmed they won’t be renewing his contract.
