The 27-year-old in-form USMNT star Weston McKennie continues to grow in importance for Juventus, and so does the interest surrounding his future. The United States International was once again on the scoresheet, striking in the 64th minute to round off a dominant Serie A performance as the Old Lady dispatched Cremonese 5-0.
Under new head coach Luciano Spalletti, McKennie has experienced something of a career resurgence, becoming a fundamental figure after previously being deemed surplus to requirements.
This upward trajectory has not gone unnoticed, and with McKennie’s contract set to expire in the summer, Juventus now find themselves at a crossroads: retain him at the risk of losing him for nothing, or cash in while the window remains open. As things stand, there has been no agreement over an extension, and clubs across Europe are beginning to circle the US star.
As per Ben Jacobs, Atlético Madrid are among the clubs monitoring McKennie’s situation, with the Spanish side in the market for midfield reinforcements following the sale of Conor Gallagher to Tottenham Hotspur.
He also reports that interest has emerged from the Premier League, where two unnamed clubs are understood to have made initial approaches for the American. Furthermore, he has attracted attention from within Italy, while a move to Beşiktaş, despite recent reports, is not currently viewed as a feasible outcome.
Juventus are believed to be open to a January sale, but only on their terms, with the Turin club seeking a fee in excess of £10 million. Some reports suggest they would hold out for closer to £15 million.
McKennie has featured in a staggering 19 of Juventus’ 20 Serie A matches this season, starting every League game since Spaletti’s appointment. Versatile, tactically flexible, and with a powerhouse of an engine, the United States International has contributed two goals and three assists, extending his run of consecutive starts for the Bianconeri.
With the second half of the Winter window here and counting, Juventus may soon be forced to act swiftly regarding the future of the 27-year-old midfielder.
