Relegation pressure is mounting at the London Stadium, but West Ham United may just have received a timely lift and it has little to do with results on the pitch.
With only 10 matches remaining and a painful 5-2 defeat to Liverpool still lingering, the Hammers know their margin for error is razor-thin. Survival remains the priority. But behind the scenes, contingency plans are already being mapped out.
Reports emerging from Mexico suggest that Raul Jimenez has rejected the possibility of returning to Liga MX this summer, instead prioritising an extended stay in the Premier League. That decision could open the door for English clubs, including West Ham.
The 34-year-old is approaching the end of his contract at Fulham, and all indications point toward a departure from Craven Cottage once the season concludes.
Despite registering nine goals in all competitions this term, Fulham appear ready to refresh their attacking options, with a potential replacement already being lined up. For West Ham, that scenario presents an opportunity.
Jimenez may no longer be in his physical prime, but his pedigree in England is unquestionable. During his peak years at Wolverhampton Wanderers, the Mexican forward was among the league’s most reliable number 9’s, earning praise from former teammate Conor Coady, who once described him as “sensational.”
In a market where proven Premier League strikers command hefty fees, the prospect of acquiring an experienced forward on a free transfer significantly strengthens West Ham’s negotiating position.
Crucially, reports indicate Jimenez would prefer to remain in England and is targeting a move to another mid-table Premier League side rather than heading abroad.
That preference plays directly into West Ham’s hands, provided they avoid relegation. However, they’re not alone in the pursuit of the ex-Benfica man.
Everton have also been credited with interest in recent months, and their current league standing may make them an appealing option from a stability standpoint.
However, West Ham’s need for attacking reinforcement could make their pursuit more aggressive if safety is secured.
The club have struggled for consistent goals this campaign, and adding a seasoned striker with nearly a decade of Premier League experience would provide depth, leadership and tactical flexibility.
