Ollie Watkins has admitted Aston Villa’s win over West Ham United was “massive” after responding to his recent England snub with a match-winning performance.

The 30-year-old striker scored the decisive goal to secure all three points for Aston Villa, ending his league goal drought stretching back to January.

Watkins’ performance comes just days after he was left out of the latest England national football team squad, dealing a blow to his international ambitions.

However, the forward responded in style, guiding Villa to a crucial victory that strengthens their push for a top-four finish.

“It was sweet because I had quite a few opportunities in the game,” Watkins said.

“The one you probably least expect, the ball just fell to me nicely and I’ve done well to lift it over the keeper,” the 30-year-old said in quotes revealed by Express and Star.

The Villa striker described the display as one of the team’s standout performances this season, especially after a run of inconsistent form.

“Off the back of a bit of poor form, that is one of the best performances we have had this season,” he added.

The result was even more significant as rivals around them dropped points, giving Villa a stronger foothold in the race for UEFA Champions League qualification.

Despite the disappointment of missing out on international duty, Watkins acknowledged the decision and remains focused on improving his form.

“Everyone wants to play for their country but I expected that because my form has not been that great,” he admitted.

“I know what I can do… when I put on an England shirt I feel like I have always performed well.”

With momentum back on their side, Watkins and Villa will now look to build on this result as they continue their push for Champions League football.
