Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on a deal to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher.

Gallagher left the English League to try his trade in La Liga back in 2024, after leaving Chelsea where he came up through their academy. The England international was a regular for the London side before leaving to work under Diego Simeone at Atletico.

The ex-Chelsea midfielder was reportedly advancing with a deal to join Aston Villa earlier on Monday, with Tottenham making contact today regarding a possible move. Spurs were in the transfer market for a midfielder this month after Rodrigo Bentancur’s recent injury, which is set to keep him out for more than three months, with surgery needed.

He has struggled for regular game time at Atletico Madrid this season, making just four starts in La Liga. Although the England international has been a regular in the squad, Diego Simeone has restricted him predominantly to substitute appearances this campaign.

According to The Athletic’s correspondent David Ornstein, Tottenham are now closing in on the signing of Atletico Madrid midfielder Gallagher, for a fee in the region of £35m.

He said, “Tottenham Hotspur closing in on deal to sign Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid. Clubs nearing agreement after #THFC made €40m proposal – expected to be accepted by #Atleti + 25yo England international believed to be keen on move.”

It was also reported that Aston Villa were close to an agreement for Gallagher, but they were unable to agree the details of a loan deal. Spurs subsequently made a move for a permanent deal, which is more appealing to Atletico.

With the World Cup hosted in the United States coming later this year, Gallagher wants to play regularly in order to give himself the best chance of breaking into Thomas Tuchel’s England squad.
