Nigeria’s Super Falcons were beaten at the death by Cameroon after a stoppage-time goal settled a closely fought pre-WAFCON friendly in Yaounde on Saturday night.
Just when the game appeared to be moving toward a draw, Mbomezomo Yvana struck late for the hosts, handing the Indomitable Lionesses a narrow 1-0 victory at the Military Stadium and leaving Nigeria with work to do ahead of next month’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Head coach Justine Madugu handed opportunities to several new players while keeping the experienced players in the squad.
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade led the side, while Gift Monday spearheaded the attack, and goalkeeper Comfort Eruabor was handed her senior debut between the posts.
Midfielder Ngozi Okobi also returned to the starting lineup after a lengthy absence from international duty.
Nigeria began with intent and controlled large spells of the opening half, pushing Cameroon back early on but struggling to find the final touch in front of goal.
Despite steady pressure from the visitors, the home side remained organised defensively as both teams went into the break level.
Changes followed after halftime as Madugu rotated his squad, bringing in fresh energy with Folashade Ijamilusi and debutant Precious Christopher joining the contest.
The Falcons continued searching for a breakthrough, yet clear-cut chances were limited in a match that was more about physical duelling.
Cameroon made their moment count deep into injury time. A late attacking move opened space inside Nigeria’s penalty area, allowing Yvana to finish decisively, sealing the win for the hosts.
Both sides are scheduled to meet again in a second friendly at the same ground on Tuesday, giving the Falcons an immediate opportunity to get their lick back before the WAFCON 2026.
Nigeria will begin their title defence in Group C alongside Zambia, Egypt and tournament newcomers Malawi, with their opening match set for March 18 in Casablanca.
A place in the semi-finals will also secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
