The Teranga Lions of Senegal are set to take on the Pharaohs of Egypt in a blockbuster semi-final clash at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Both sides enter into this encounter in fine form, having managed to stay unbeaten in their journey to this stage of the tournament. They boast a similar record so far, with four wins and a draw each.

As it stands, one of these two heavyweights will taste defeat for the first time in this competition with the other, booking a place in the final. This sets things up nicely for a potentially nerve-wracking encounter at Grande Stade de Tamger.

How Senegal and Egypt reached the semi-final

Senegal kicked off their Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a commanding win over Botswana. The Teranga Lions then drew 1-1 with DR Congo before registering another commanding win, this time against Benin to finish top of Group D.

In the round of 16, Senegal came up against Sudan and routinely dispatched the East Africans. The 2021 AFCON winners would go on to book their place in the semi-final courtesy of a 1-0 win over West African neighbours Mali.

In an equally impressive run to the last four, Egypt started off their campaign with consecutive wins over Zimbabwe and South Africa respectively. The Pharaohs then settled for a goalless draw in their final group game against Angola.

For their round of 16 tie, the seven-time AFCON winners beat Benin 3-1 before going on to eliminate defending champions Ivory Coast in the quarterfinal courtesy of a thrilling 3-2 victory in Agadir.

Head-to-head record

Senegal and Egypt have faced off on fifteen occasions in the past. The Pharaohs held a slight advantage in the overall head-to-head record with seven victories to the Teranga Lions’ six.

However, recent history heavily favours Senegal with the West Africans winning four of the last five encounters against their Northern counterparts.

What to expect from Senegal vs Egypt

Whenever these two teams collide, it is usually a tight affair. 12 out of their 15 meetings have produced only one goal and both teams have scored against each other in regular time on just one occasion.

In fact, their most recent AFCON encounter came in the final of the 2021 edition where Senegal needed a penalty shootout to lift the trophy after they played out a 0-0 draw.

With this in mind, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise if both teams continue this trend by delivering another low-scoring fixture in Tanger.
