Mikel Arteta Among Leading Contenders as Real Madrid Plot Permanent Coaching Appointment

Real Madrid have included Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta among the leading candidates for their managerial vacancy, with the Spanish giants planning to appoint a permanent head coach ahead of next season.

The Bernabéu outfit are actively evaluating options after parting ways with head coach Xabi Alonso, who left following a series of disappointing results.

Arteta has emerged as a serious contender, joining a shortlist that also features ex-Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca and other high-profile managers. Real Madrid’s decision to move quickly comes as they seek stability after an inconsistent spell under Alonso and the interim guidance of Álvaro Arbeloa.

Reports confirm that the club intends to finalise the new appointment during the summer, allowing the incoming manager to prepare for the 2026–27 campaign.

At Arsenal, Arteta remains under contract until June 2027, having signed a three-year extension in September 2024. Some club sources however confirm that the Spaniard is committed to the Gunners’ project and has no plans to entertain approaches from other teams.

Since taking charge in December 2019, he has led the North London side to consistent top-six finishes and guided them to the FA Cup title in 2020. Arsenal are currently competitive across all domestic competitions.

Manchester City are also understood to be monitoring the situation, with Pep Guardiola’s long-term succession plans under discussion.

Arsenal officials have insisted that the 43-year-old remains focused on completing the season with the Gunners, while Real Madrid continue to evaluate their shortlist ahead of making a definitive choice.

The summer appointment is expected to set the tone for the club’s strategy in both La Liga and European competitions, with the club hierarchy determined to secure a coach who can deliver immediate results and long-term direction.
