Portuguese defender Raphael Guerreiro is set to leave Bayern Munich when his contract expires at the end of the season, bringing an end to his three-year stay at the club.
Guerreiro joined the record German champions on a free transfer from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2023, before making his debut in September of that year.
The 32-year-old played his part in Bayern’s Bundesliga triumph last season, featuring 23 times in the league and starting 19 of those matches.
He also came off the bench in the Bavarians’ German Super Cup win over Stuttgart earlier in the campaign, securing his second piece of silverware with the club.
However, his influence has waned this season. The Portuguese international has been limited to just 23 appearances across all competitions so far, and only 13 of them have come in the Bundesliga, with just four starts.
In total, Guerreiro has made 89 appearances for Bayern Munich and will now move on in search of a new challenge as he enters the next phase of his career.
The former Lorient defender now joins German midfielder Leon Goretzka in departing the club at the end of the season.
Bayern Munich director of sport Max Eberl confirmed the decision to part ways with the defender, in quotes revealed by the official Bayern Munich website.
“We would like to express our sincere thanks to Rapha for the time he has spent with us, we could always rely on Rapha on the pitch, and he is one of those characters who enriches any dressing room.
“Our discussions with him were constructive and based on trust and mutual understanding. We are now focusing, alongside him, on our goals for the rest of the season – there’s still a lot we want to achieve together.”
While no decision has been made regarding his next destination, Guerreiro’s availability on a free transfer is likely to attract interest from several top European clubs ahead of the summer window.
For now, his focus will be on finishing the season strongly with Bayern Munich and strengthening his chances of earning a recall to the Portugal national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
