Two English Premier League clubs are mulling over a move for Xabi Alonso following his sack at Real Madrid.
On Monday, January 12, Spanish giants Real Madrid announced the termination of Alonso’s contract after just eight months on the job. Although there had been reports about his potential dismissal since the turn of the year, the 3-2 loss to arch-rivals Barcelona in the Spanish Supercopa catalyzed it.
Now the Spanish tactician is a free agent, but he is not short of suitors because he has a rich CV. Recall that he led Bayer Leverkusen to their first-ever Bundesliga title two years ago and helped them to a second-place finish last season.
According to fresh reports from Sky Sports News, Premier League giants Liverpool and Manchester City are thinking about a move for Alonso.
Liverpool have struggled badly under Arne Slot this season despite massive investments in their squad in the summer transfer window. Although the Dutch manager seems to still have a good manager with the club, he is walking a tightrope and could get the sack if he and his player don’t get their acts right soon.
For Manchester City, there is a growing belief that coach Pep Guardiola will soon call time on his time at the club. As such, in recent months, they have been linked with several coaches as potential replacements.
Although there is no confirmation that either of these clubs has contacted Alonso, he will be tempted by the prospect of being in charge of these two English giants. Hence, it should not be a surprise if he lands in England in the coming months.
