Newcastle United eyeing shock move for Manuel Ugarte as potential Tonali replacement

Manchester United Manuel Ugarte

Newcastle United are lining up a shock move for Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte as they prepare for a possible midfield reshuffle ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Magpies are bracing up for the possible departure of Sandro Tonali, who has attracted strong interest from top European sides including Arsenal, Real Madrid, Liverpool and Manchester United.

With speculations continuing to grow, the Italian midfielder’s exit appears increasingly likely this summer.

There is also uncertainty surrounding the future of captain Bruno Guimaraes, who remains a target for several clubs and could consider leaving if the club fails to secure Champions League football.

According to reports from TeamTalk, Newcastle have identified Ugarte as a major target as they aim for a long-term rebuild in the midfield.

The Uruguay international joined Manchester United in 2024, but has seen his role reduced this season.

Despite being an important part of the squad during his debut campaign, he has struggled for regular minutes, particularly following the arrival of Michael Carrick in January and has only made two Premier League starts in 2026.

The 24-year-old is now expected to leave Old Trafford this summer as Manchester United plan a major squad overhaul, with the midfield their highest priority.

However, Newcastle could face stiff competition for Ugarte’s signature, with Italian heavyweights Juventus also keen on bringing him to Italy, as we reported earlier.

Manchester United are open to selling Ugarte to raise funds for their rebuild and the 24-year-old is also open to a move to secure more consistent playing time.

A move to Newcastle would offer him the opportunity to remain in the Premier League and could also help him rediscover his best form.
