Newcastle United are exploring a potential deal to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Brandt, who could become available on a free transfer at the end of the current campaign.
The Magpies are believed to be in talks over the experienced German playmaker as they look to strengthen their squad while navigating financial restrictions.
With the introduction of the Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) rules, clubs are now limited in how much of their revenue they can spend on wages, transfer fees and agents’ fees.
Teams competing in European competitions can only spend 70% of their revenue, while clubs outside Europe are allowed to spend up to 85%.
Although missing out on European football may technically increase Newcastle’s spending limit, the club would also lose significant revenue from competitions like the UEFA Champions League, potentially reducing their overall transfer budget.
Manager Eddie Howe could therefore be forced to operate carefully in the market this summer.
Financial pressures could also push Newcastle into selling one of their star players.
Winger Anthony Gordon has reportedly attracted interest from Arsenal FC, while midfield star Bruno Guimarães is said to be on the radar of Manchester United FC.
Losing either player would be a significant setback for the Magpies, but the club is already planning potential reinforcements.
According to reports, Newcastle have opened discussions regarding a possible deal for Brandt after his agent approached the club.
The 29-year-old attacking midfielder is expected to leave Borussia Dortmund when his contract expires this summer, which has also attracted interest from Aston Villa FC.
Dortmund sporting director Lars Ricken recently highlighted the midfielder’s long service to the Bundesliga club.
“He’s played a few hundred games for Borussia Dortmund,” Ricken said earlier this month.
With years of experience at the top level and the ability to play in multiple attacking roles, Brandt could represent a smart and cost-effective addition for Newcastle as they prepare for the next transfer window.
