Newcastle United are exploring options to strengthen their right-back position ahead of the summer transfer window, with Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Ryerson emerging as a potential candidate to replace Kieran Trippier.
The Magpies could face significant changes in that area of the squad at the end of the season. Trippier’s current deal is set to expire this summer and, despite the veteran defender continuing to play an important role this season, there has been little indication that the club are preparing a new contract offer.
Meanwhile, the future of Tino Livramento is also uncertain, with the England international reportedly attracting interest from Manchester City.
With both players potentially departing, Newcastle may be forced to enter the market for reinforcements.
According to Football Insider, Ryerson has been identified as a possible target. The Norwegian has impressed at Borussia Dortmund and could become available this summer as the Bundesliga side look to generate funds through player sales.
Dortmund are believed to value the 28-year-old at around £26 million, a figure that represents a drop from earlier reports suggesting they would demand closer to £35 million.
The reduced valuation could make the experienced full-back an attractive option for clubs monitoring the situation.
Ryerson has enjoyed a productive campaign in Germany, contributing 11 assists in 22 Bundesliga appearances this season.
His attacking output from the right flank has been a key feature of his game, something that could appeal to Newcastle as they consider long-term options in the position.
The Magpies are not alone in tracking the defender, with Manchester United also said to be monitoring his situation.
However, if Newcastle decide to move forward with their interest, Ryerson’s experience and attacking qualities could make him a natural candidate to fill the void should Trippier depart.
