Newcastle United are considering making a summer move for Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones as a potential replacement for Sandro Tonali, who could leave the club at the end of the season.
According to TeamTalk, the Magpies have identified the England international as part of their plans for the summer transfer window, with Tonali’s future at St James’ Park looking uncertain.
As we earlier reported, Juventus are prepared to go all out to sign Tonali in the summer, viewing him as an important part of their long-term rebuild.
Premier League giants Arsenal and Manchester City have also been linked with a move for the Italian midfielder, leaving Newcastle to start an early search for a suitable replacement.
Jones is a product of Liverpool’s academy and was promoted to the first team in 2018. He has made 21 appearances in the Premier League this season, although only 10 have been starts.
Increased competition for places at the Reds has limited his role, with the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister all competing for midfield spots.
The 25-year-old’s contract situation has attracted attention from clubs across Europe. With just 18 months left on his current contract, Jones is looking increasingly unlikely to sign an extension. Inter Milan approached to sign him during the January transfer window, but Liverpool rejected the bid.
A move to Newcastle would be appealing to Jones, allowing him to remain in England while securing a more regular role. Meanwhile, Liverpool may look to cash in to avoid losing him for free if he fails to sign a contract extension.
