Newcastle confirm Trippier departure after four-year stay

Kieran Trippier will leave Newcastle United at the end of the season, bringing the curtain down on one of the most impactful individual tenures in the club’s recent history.

The 35-year-old right-back joined Newcastle from Atletico Madrid in January 2022 for £12 million, becoming the first signing Eddie Howe made following the Saudi-led takeover.

At the time, the club were in the relegation places, having won just one game all season. What followed was a transformation that few could have predicted at that point.

Trippier made over 150 appearances for the club, scoring four goals, and played a central role in Newcastle qualifying for the Champions League twice in three seasons.

The crowning moment came last season, when he played the full 90 minutes at Wembley as Newcastle beat Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final, lifting the club’s first domestic trophy in 70 years alongside captain Bruno Guimarães.

In a statement released by the club, Trippier was candid about what the move meant to him.

“This is where I have felt most at home,” he said.

“It’s emotional, and I’m really going to miss it. To win a trophy with you guys was really, really special, the best of my career.”

Howe paid tribute to a player he described as transformative.

“From the moment he walked through the door, he has helped to drive standards that have changed the club’s trajectory,” the Newcastle head coach said.

“His leadership skills have been invaluable.”

Trippier’s final appearance for the club is expected to come in Newcastle’s last Premier League game of the season against Fulham on May 24.

After spells at Burnley, Tottenham and Atletico Madrid, where he won the La Liga title in 2021, he leaves Tyneside having added a Carabao Cup winner’s medal to a career that also includes a Champions League final appearance for Spurs in 2019.
