Mohamed Ouahbi set to replace Walid Regragui as Morocco headcoach

Morocco have confirmed the departure of head coach Walid Regragui, with Mohamed Ouahbi set to take charge of the national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup, as reported by Hanif Ben Berkane.

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation accepted Regragui’s resignation after weeks of uncertainty surrounding his future,  bringing an end to a three-year spell that included the country’s historic run to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup.

The federation had previously denied reports suggesting the coach intended to step down, but discussions continued behind the scenes as officials worked to identify a successor before making the decision public.

Regragui leaves the role having guided Morocco through one of the most memorable chapters in the national team’s history,  even if recent results began to change the mood around the side.

The defeat in the Africa Cup of Nations final proved the turning point, bringing an end to a cycle that had run its course.

Morocco have instead turned inwards, promoting from within their development structure rather than looking at options abroad.

Ouahbi,  who guided the country’s U20 side to a historic World Cup triumph last year, now steps into senior international management for the first time.

The Belgian-Moroccan coach built his reputation during a long spell in Anderlecht’s academy before joining Morocco’s youth setup in 2022, where his work with young talents quickly drew attention inside the federation.

He is expected to lead the Atlas Lions into upcoming friendlies against Ecuador and Paraguay as preparations begin for the next World Cup.
