Bayern Munich’s legendary goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has revealed his stance on a potential return to the Germany national team ahead of this summer’s FIFA World Cup in North America.
Neuer spent fifteen long years in the German national team setup before officially calling time on that chapter of his career back in August 2024.
However, his name has continually been linked with a potential return, especially with the Mundial fast approaching.
Current Germany first-choice goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is embroiled in an ongoing battle with injuries and is looking increasingly likely to miss the World Cup, increasing calls for Neuer to come out of retirement.
One of such calls recently originated from Bayern Munich president Herbert Hanier, who voiced his support for the 39-year-old’s return. However, the veteran shot-stopper has dismissed the idea.
“Those are, of course, nice words, but he knows my decision very well. So I can’t help but smile a little,” Neuer told Bild following Bayern’s 2-0 DFB Pokal win over RB Leipzig on Wednesday.
When pressed further on whether his decision is final, Neuer simply replied in the affirmative, pouring cold water on any hopes of his return to the international scene.
If Ter Stegen is unable to recover in time for the World Cup, Germany will most likely head to this summer’s tournament with Oliver Baumann as their first-choice goalkeeper and the Hoffenheim star has the blessings of the Bayern legend.
“He is now number one and is doing his job very well. Overall, he has shown very good performances, and I, of course, wish him all the best and keep my fingers crossed for him.”
As for Neuer, his full focus remains on finishing this season strongly with Bayern Munich. The Bavarians are leading the way in the Bundesliga and are also strong contenders in the UEFA Champions League and DFB Pokal.
