Juventus identify Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali as summer transfer priority

Former Serie A champions Juventus have identified Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali as their top transfer target for the summer, according to reports from BBC Sport.

The Old Ladies have admired Tonali since his time at Brescia and are keen on his signature as part of a major summer rebuild.

Juventus are desperate to return to the apex of Italian football, having last won the league title in the 2019-20 season and have identified the Italian midfielder as a very important addition.

The club attempted to sign the 25-year-old last summer through a player-plus-cash deal involving Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz, but the proposal was rejected by Newcastle, according to reports from Gazzetta dello Sport.

Tonali moved to the English Premier League from AC Milan in 2023 in a €64 million move, which made him the most expensive Italian footballer in history at the time, although the fee has now been surpassed by the €70 million Al-Qadsiah paid to Atalanta for Mateo Retegui last summer.

He has made over 90 appearances across all competitions for the Magpies and has continued to attract interest from top clubs with his performances. Arsenal were linked with a move for Tonali during the January transfer window after an injury to midfielder Mikel Merino.

The midfielder could consider an exit in the summer if Newcastle fail to qualify for the Champions League, while it remains unclear if he would prioritise a return to Italy.

Juventus will also face stiff competition from other interested clubs for his signature, although any deal could prove difficult given that he is under contract until 2028.
