Jose Mourinho reveals stance on future at Benfica

Jose Mourinho has reaffirmed his commitment to Benfica despite growing speculation about a possible departure at the end of the season.

The Portuguese great returned to the Eagles last September on a two-year deal, although his contract reportedly included a clause that could have allowed him to leave this summer.

The 63-year-old has been the subject of interest from several interested suitors, including the Portugal national team, who are said to be considering him as a potential replacement for Roberto Martinez.

The former Everton head coach’s contract runs until after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but his future could depend on Portugal’s performance at the tournament.

Mourinho has also been linked with a return to Real Madrid, following the departure of Xabi Alonso earlier this year and with Alvaro  Arbeloa expected to step down from his interim role at the end of the season.

Despite the speculation, the former Chelsea manager has made it clear he is focused on Benfica, where he remains under contract until the 2026–27 season.

“Jorge Mendes is my agent, but I am responsible for my own decision. My decision is that I would like to continue at Benfica”, Mourinho said in quotes revealed by Tribal Football.

The former Chelsea manager began his coaching career at Benfica in 2000, taking charge after replacing Jupp Heynckes.

Although his first spell lasted only a few months before he tendered his resignation, he has since built one of the most decorated managerial careers in football, including leading Porto to a famous UEFA Champions League triumph in 2004.

Mourinho is now set to remain at the club at least until the end of next season, and while the title race appears to be slipping away, he will be focused on finishing the season strongly and helping Benfica secure Champions League qualification for next season with only a few games left in the current campaign.
