Manchester United have received a major defensive boost ahead of next season after securing the immediate future of England international defender Harry Maguire following a one-year contract extension.

Maguire had been well into the final months of his current contract at Old Trafford, and he could have easily walked away on a free transfer at the end of the season.

However, United, having already triggered a one-year extension clause last year, were keen to open fresh negotiations to avoid any uncertainty surrounding the former Leicester City defender’s future.

The Red Devils have now successfully tied Maguire to a new one-year contract that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2027, while also retaining the option to extend his stay for a further year

Reacting after signing the new deal, Maguire, who has racked up 266 appearances and won the Carabao Cup and Emirates FA Cup since joining United in 2019, could barely hide his excitement.

“Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour. It is a responsibility that makes me and my family proud every single day,” the experienced defender said, per quotes revealed on the club’s official website.

“I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club to at least eight seasons and continue to play in front of our special supporters to create more amazing moments together.

“You can feel the ambition and potential of this exciting squad. The determination throughout the whole club to fight for major trophies is clear for everyone to see, and I am confident that our best moments together remain ahead of us.”

Maguire’s renewal comes off the back of his rejuvenated form under the tutelage of current Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick.

Since the return of the former midfielder to the Old Trafford dugout, Maguire has been an ever-present figure at the heart of defence.

The 33-year-old defender has started all ten of United’s matches under Carrick, with his composure and authority coming to the fore in the absence of the injured duo Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt.

His resurgence deservedly earned him a return to the English national team after Thomas Tuchel called him up for the March international break.

While away with England, he featured in both of their fixtures and made a strong case for himself ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

With Maguire’s future no longer a topic of concern, Manchester can now turn their focus to finishing the season strongly, securing Champions League football for next season and then going all out for midfield reinforcements in the summer transfer window.
