Viktor Gyokeres has been named Player of the Matchweek after scoring twice in Arsenal’s 4-1 win over Tottenham in the north London derby on Sunday.
Gyokeres has had a complicated first season at the Emirates. Arsenal paid £64 million to bring him from Sporting in the summer, and the weight of that fee has followed him around all season.
He reportedly failed to register a shot on target in 15 of his 26 league games, and after a quiet outing at Wolves in midweek, questions were piling up again heading into the derby.
He answered them all in the space of 90 minutes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The 27-year-old restored Arsenal’s lead with a thumping strike from the edge of the box early in the second half, then stayed alive in stoppage time to collect Martin Odegaard’s through ball and tuck home a fourth to seal the points.
The striker revealed after the game that the squad had held a frank team meeting following the Wolves’ disappointment, and that it had brought them closer together.
“It’s always going to be difficult when you get a result like we had at Wolves, but it’s how you handle it and how you respond, and today we showed that in a good way,” the Swede told Sky Sports.
The brace took Gyokeres to 15 goals in all competitions this season, eight of them coming in 2026 alone, more than any other Premier League player in the calendar year. Arsenal sit five points clear at the top of the table.
