Conor Hourihane Slams ‘Disrespectful’ Liverpool Star After Barnsley FA Cup defeat

Barnsley head coach Conor Hourihane has called Dominik Szoboszlai ‘disrespectful’, after the Liverpool midfielder’s conduct in Monday night’s FA Cup third round defeat.

The Hungary midfielder was at fault for the Tykes only goal of the clash making an overconfident error in the first half, although the League One side went on to lose 4-1 on the night.

Szoboszlai’s bizarre error gifts Barnsley goal

Liverpool had hoped to avoid a shock result when they welcomed Barnsley to Anfield in their FA Cup third round clash.

The tone was set for a perfect night when Szoboszlai opened the scoring with a stunning long range strike that flew past Murphy Cooper, before Jeremie Frimpong added a second.

However, a moment of overconfidence from the Hungarian captain gifted the visitors a way back into the clash late in the first half.

In the 40th minute of the clash, the 25-year-old raced back to stop an attack from Barnsley and under no pressure at all, he attempted a back-heel to goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, despite having time and space to clear the ball.

This allowed Adam Phillips to pull one back for the Tykes, as Liverpool took a 2-1 lead into the interval.

Arne Slot responded by bringing on Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz in the second half and the two summer arrivals combined for two more goals to complete a 4-1 win for the Premier League champions.

Hourihane unhappy with Liverpool star’s conduct

Speaking to TNT Sports after the clash, Barnsley head coach Hourihane criticized Szoboszlai’s disrespectful conduct.

“I was a little bit disappointed with our goal, I don’t think a player does that against Chelsea, against Arsenal or in a Champions League game”, Hourihane admitted.

“I’m a little bit disappointed with that to be honest, I thought my lads were top.”

Barnsley are now out of this season’s FA Cup, but Liverpool progressed to the fourth round, where they will now face Premier League rivals Brighton and Hove Albion.
