Former Chelsea winger Sterling joins Feyenoord as a free agent

Raheem Sterling has completed a move to Dutch giants Feyenoord until the end of the season, according to reports from Fabrizio Romano on X.

The England international had been without a club since mutually terminating his contract with Chelsea last month, following a prolonged spell out of the team after falling out of favour with former head coach Enzo Maresca.

Sterling joined the Blues in 2022 for £47.5 million after a highly successful stint at Manchester City, where he won four Premier League titles.

However, he struggled for consistency during his time at Stamford Bridge and was loaned to Arsenal for the 2024-25 season, where he managed just one goal in 28 appearances.

The 31-year-old last played competitive football in May 2025, but was not short of suitors after his departure from Chelsea. Several Premier League clubs explored the possibility of a move, with Everton emerging as frontrunners after a season-ending injury to on-loan Manchester City forward Jack Grealish.

Leeds United and West Ham United were also interested, but the winger ultimately opted for a move abroad.

Sterling will now work under former Arsenal and Manchester United striker Robin Van Persie at the Dutch club, marking the first overseas move of his career.

Feyenoord are currently unlikely to challenge for the Eredivisie this season as they are 17 points adrift of leaders PSV Eindhoven, but were quick to secure the winger’s signature to add experience and depth, following an injury to young forward Shaqueel Van Persie.

The move represents a fresh start for Sterling and an opportunity to revive his career after a difficult spell at Chelsea. An impressive stint in the Netherlands could also put him back on the radar for an England recall, having last featured for the Three Lions at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
