Two-time European champions Chelsea have opened talks over a potential move for Werder Bremen defender Karim Coulibaly ahead of the summer transfer window.
The 18-year-old only made his senior debut in August 2025, but is already attracting serious interest from top European clubs after an impressive breakthrough campaign.
The German youth international has featured 22 times in the Bundesliga this season and has been one of the few bright spots in what has been a difficult campaign for Werder Bremen.
Despite his age, he has already established himself as a key figure in the heart of the club’s defence.
Recent reports now suggest that Chelsea are now looking to make a concrete offer for a possible deal as they plan to strengthen their backline ahead of next season.
The Blues are expected to prioritise defensive reinforcements during the summer transfer window, especially with uncertainty surrounding the future of several defenders at the club.
Tosin Adarabioyo, Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi, who is currently on loan at West Ham United, could all move on at the end of the season, which would leave the London club short of options at the back.
Chelsea were also in the market for a defender during the winter transfer window and came close to signing French centre-back Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes, as we reported earlier.
However, the move fell through, with the player joining Premier League champions Liverpool instead.
Coulibaly fits the club’s recruitment model perfectly, given his age and long-term potential. With Chelsea unlikely to have any issues meeting Werder Bremen’s asking price, they could move quickly to secure a deal if negotiations progress well.
