Despite recent reports that Manchester United could trigger a clause in Casemiro’s contract, Manchester United have confirmed that experienced Brazilian midfielder, Casemiro, will depart Old Trafford when his contract expires in the summer.
Casemiro joined the Red Devils from Real Madrid back in the summer of 2022 and wasted no time in becoming a fan favourite at the Theatre of Dreams courtesy of his combative nature and ability to produce clutch moments.
In four rollercoaster seasons at Old Trafford, the Brazil international has racked up 146 appearances across all competitions and produced 33 goal contributions (21 goals and 12 assists).
He played a significant role in United’s 2023 Carabao Cup triumph where he scored a thumping header against Newcastle United in the final. The defensive midfield lynchpin also helped the Red Devils to win the Emirates FA Cup the following year.
Casemiro endured near misses with Man United as well, losing out to local rivals Manchester City in the 2023 FA Cup final as well as falling short against Tottenham Hotspur in last season’s UEFA Europa League final.
In an emotional message to the fans, Casemiro said: “I will carry Manchester United with me throughout my entire life.
“From the first day that I walked out at this beautiful stadium, I felt the passion of Old Trafford and the love that I now share with our supporters for this special club.
“It is not time to say goodbye; there are many more memories to create during the next four months.
“We still have a lot to fight for together; my complete focus will, as always, remain on giving my everything to help our club to succeed.”
United had the option of triggering a one-year extension option in Casemiro’s expiring contract, but the 33-year-old’s eye-watering £375,000 per week wages meant the club’s hierarchy, who are determined to cut costs and bring their wage bill down, were never really going to exploit that option.
The announcement of Casemiro’s imminent departure comes right after the Brazilian’s spectacular display in Man United’s dominant 2-0 win against City last weekend where they deservedly claimed bragging rights over their neighbours.
Manchester United fans will be hoping their midfield general can continue to produce that kind performance week in, week out as they aim to accomplish this season’s ultimate target of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League ahead of next season.
Old Trafford will get a chance to say a proper farewell to Casemiro after the Red Devils’ final home game of this Premier League campaign against Nottingham Forest on Sunday, May 17.
