Arsenal lead race to sign Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon ahead of Liverpool, Manchester United

Arsenal have moved ahead for Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon, with recent reports indicating that the Gunners are ready to submit a £75 million offer for the England international this summer.

Liverpool and Manchester United have both been credited with interest in the 25-year-old, but Arsenal believe they hold the edge in the race and are confident Gordon would be open to a move to the Emirates.

The winger has 14 goals and five assists across all competitions this season, and Mikel Arteta is drawn to his versatility, having been used as a false nine by Newcastle at various points during the campaign.

The problem, though, is that Newcastle have no desire to sell. Gordon signed a long-term extension at the club in October 2024, meaning his contract now runs until 2030.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, who is still coming to terms with losing Alexander Isak to Liverpool last summer, moved to shut down the speculation when it came up in his press conference on Friday.

Gordon has been here before and knows better than to get pulled into it. Asked about the links earlier in February, he reportedly said;

“I haven’t heard anything; they might want to tell me before they tell you. I’ve gone through enough transfer stuff now to know that it is all a load of rubbish.”

“I am focused on me and focused on the team, focused on right now. You look too far into the future, and you start to underperform. And believe me, I have done that before, and I am not going to do that now.”

The Magpies have just drawn Barcelona in the Champions League round of sixteen, and with that kind of football to play for at St James’ Park, convincing Gordon to push for the exit door will not be easy.

Arsenal will need to go well above £75 million if they are serious, with Newcastle reportedly holding out for closer to £95 million.
