Arsenal FC have stepped up their interest in Newcastle United FC midfielder Sandro Tonali as they prepare to challenge Manchester United FC for his signature this summer.
The Italian international joined Newcastle from AC Milan in 2023 but endured a difficult debut campaign after being suspended for breaching betting regulations.
Following his return from suspension, Tonali quickly rediscovered his form and became a key figure for Eddie Howe’s side.
The 25-year-old played an important role in helping Newcastle lift the EFL Cup, their first major trophy in nearly 70 years, while also contributing to the club’s qualification for the UEFA Champions League.
Last season, Tonali recorded nine goal contributions in 45 appearances across all competitions, and he has continued that impressive form this term, once again proving his importance to Howe’s midfield.
According to reports, Arsenal explored the possibility of signing Tonali during the January transfer window but were unable to complete a deal.
However, the North London club remain strong admirers of the midfielder and are now preparing to renew their pursuit in the summer.
Manager Mikel Arteta reportedly views Tonali as an ideal fit for his system, while sporting director Andrea Berta is also said to be a strong supporter of a potential move.
Reports suggest that Tonali’s representatives were recently spotted at the Emirates Stadium, hinting that preliminary discussions may already have taken place.
Arsenal could face significant competition for the midfielder’s signature.
Manchester United are said to be considering Tonali as a possible replacement for Casemiro, who will depart the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.
Meanwhile, Juventus FC are also monitoring the situation and would welcome the midfielder back to Serie A, although their financial difficulties may complicate a deal.
Spanish giants Real Madrid CF are also believed to be tracking Tonali’s progress ahead of a potential summer move.
Newcastle have reportedly placed an £85 million valuation on the midfielder, whose current contract at St James’ Park runs until 2029.
Although the Magpies are reluctant to sell, they could face pressure to cash in on key players if they fail to secure qualification for next season’s Champions League.
