It’s been two weeks since Manchester United chose to part ways with Ruben Amorim, but the Portuguese tactician has already been linked to a job in the English top-flight.
The United bosses opted to sack Amorim after he made comments they didn’t find pleasing in his press conference, but the ex-Sporting Lisbon manager had it coming. 14 wins in 14 games and a loss to fourth-tier Grimsby Town was simply not good enough for a club like Manchester United.
The three-time UEFA Champions League winners allowed U-18 coach Darren Fletcher take charge of two games before appointing Michael Carrick on an interim basis till the end of the season. The ex-Middlesbrough coach kicked his tenure off by sealing a 2-0 win against Manchester City.
Still, Amorim is in contention to become a coach in England just two weeks after his Carrington exit.
As per the Manchester Evening News, the 40-year-old is in line to take over from Thomas Frank at Tottenham Hotspur, if the club decide to sack the former Brentford coach. This comes after Sol Campbell made the suggestion.
Spurs parted ways with Ange Postecoglou in the summer despite the Europa League triumph, largely due to poor domestic results. While Frank’s tenure started with a flurry of good results, especially the victory against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester United, they’ve dipped.
The Lilywhites are currently 14th in the English top flight, and are without a win in their last five games. To put it into context, the two-time Premier League winners have lost their last three games, mounting pressure on Thomas Frank to turn things around.
Thomas Frank was backed in the summer with signings. The club brought in Xavi Simons, Mohammed Kudus, Randal Kolo Muani, Joao Palhinha, and, a few days ago, Connor Gallagher.
Former Spurs and Arsenal centre-back Campbell believes that Amorim would represent a smart option for Tottenham to succeed Frank, should the club opt for a managerial change.
“Ruben Amorim [would be the ideal manager for Tottenham]. They’ll be looking at him,” Campbell said in an interview with Sky Bet.
“They’re probably talking to him now; it wouldn’t surprise me. I don’t think he’ll go back to Portugal. Tottenham will be talking to him to see if there’s any situation going on – there’ll be people talking behind the scenes,” the 2006 UEFA Champions League finalist concluded.
Frank could get the final boot tonight if his side loses to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.
