Chelsea considering move for Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori

Riccardo Calafiori Arsenal injury news

Chelsea are monitoring Riccardo Calafiori’s situation at Arsenal and are ready to make a move for the defender during the summer transfer window.

The Italian moved to the North London club in 2024 from Bologna in a deal worth around £42 million and has played an important role for Mikel Arteta’s side, despite struggling with a few injury setbacks.

The 23-year-old has made 27 appearances across all competitions for the Gunners this season, but has faced increased competition for minutes at the left-back position from Piero Hincapie and Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Although he is naturally a left-footed centre-back, the strong partnership of Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba at the heart of Arsenal’s defence has often seen him deployed on the left side of the defence.

Chelsea had previously shown interest in signing Calafiori before his move to Arsenal, and reports suggest the Blues could reignite their interest in the upcoming transfer window.

The two-time European champions are expected to be in the market for defensive reinforcements and view Calafiori as a strong centre-back option, while he could also provide cover for Marc Cucurella at left-back when needed.

While Calafiori has hinted that he may return to Italy at some point in his career according to our previous reports, a move to Chelsea could also be an appealing option, giving him the chance to play in his preferred centre-back position.

However, Arsenal may only consider letting him leave if they can secure a suitable replacement, although the good relationship between both clubs should facilitate the deal if the right offer arrives.
