Liverpool enter race for Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck

Premier League champions Liverpool have become the latest club to register their interest in Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck ahead of the summer transfer window.

The highly-rated German centre-back is expected to leave the Signal Iduna Park at the end of the season, with several European heavyweights monitoring his situation.

Schlotterbeck joined Dortmund in 2022 from Freiburg and has gradually developed into one of the standout defenders in the Bundesliga. The 26-year-old has featured 28 times across all competitions for Niko Kovac’s side this season, starting all but one of those matches.

According to TeamTalk, Liverpool have now joined the list of interested clubs, with manager Arne Slot even holding talks with the defender as he hoped to convince him about the club’s long-term project.

The Reds are keen to strengthen their defence amid uncertainty surrounding the situation of Ibrahima Konate, who could leave the club when his contract runs out at the end of the season.

At the same time, captain Virgil van Dijk is already in the latter stages of his career and they are already planning for the future, hoping to add experience to the backline.

Liverpool have already secured the signing of French defender Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes during the winter transfer window, although he is expected to officially join the squad in the summer.

However, they are expected to face stiff competition for Schlotterbeck’s signature, particularly from Real Madrid, who have also shown strong interest in the defender, as we reported earlier.

Convincing the defender to move to Anfield over Madrid could prove difficult despite Slot’s meeting, although they would be securing a top player capable of strengthening their squad for many years to come if they manage to pull off the deal.
