Oxford United have confirmed the tragic death of 15-year-old academy player Amelia Aplin after she collapsed during a youth match.

The teenager was playing for the Oxford Girls’ Academy side in a fixture against Fulham FC Women when the incident occurred on Saturday at the club’s training facility in Horspath Training Ground.

In a statement released by the club, Oxford United expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the young player.

“It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of 15-year-old Academy player, Amelia Aplin,” the club said.
“The thoughts and sincere condolences from everyone at Oxford United are with Amelia’s family, friends, teammates and coaches.”

Oxford United also paid tribute to the medical personnel who responded to the emergency during the match.

“We would like to place on record our appreciation for the efforts of the medical staff at both Oxford United and Fulham Football Club, along with the emergency services,” the statement added.

Following the tragedy, Oxford United Women’s scheduled match against Real Bedford Women on Sunday was postponed.

The club said it will provide support to those affected by the incident.

“The club will offer support to Amelia’s family, players, coaches and staff impacted by this tragic event.”

The Football Association and the FA Women’s National League both issued messages of condolence after the news emerged.

The FA Women’s National League said it was “deeply saddened” by the passing of the young player and pledged to support the club during what it described as an “incredibly sad time.”

“Our thoughts are with Amelia’s family, friends and everyone at Oxford United,” the organisation said.

Supporters and members of the local community also shared tributes on social media, remembering Aplin as a promising young footballer whose life was cut tragically short.

Oxford United have asked for privacy for Aplin’s family as they mourn the loss of the talented young player.
