Marco Silva has defended his decision to rotate heavily after Fulham FC suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Southampton FC in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

The Premier League side were stunned at Craven Cottage as Championship outfit Southampton sealed a dramatic late victory to advance in the competition.

The decisive moment arrived in the 90th minute when Southampton midfielder Finn Azaz timed his run perfectly before being clipped inside the penalty area by Fulham defender Joachim Andersen.

Referee pointed to the spot, and striker Ross Stewart stepped up to convert the penalty with a powerful low strike past Fulham goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte.

The goal sparked wild celebrations among the travelling Southampton supporters and sealed a memorable cup upset.

Ahead of the match, Silva opted to make nine changes to the side that recently faced West Ham United in the Premier League, citing a demanding schedule.

Despite criticism following the defeat, the Fulham manager stood firmly by his decision.

“When you make nine changes – it was my decision, I’m going to get it. I’m the manager. We play Sunday – Wednesday – Sunday,” Silva said.

The Portuguese tactician also rejected suggestions that a controversial disallowed first-half goal played a major role in the result.

“I don’t go in that direction. To talk about that moment is for me to find excuses.”

Rather than blaming officiating decisions, Silva admitted that Fulham simply failed to deliver the level of performance required to progress in the competition.

The manager pointed to a lack of clinical finishing and overall execution as key factors behind the disappointing result.

The defeat marked a frustrating afternoon for Fulham, who were expected to progress against lower-league opposition.

With their FA Cup campaign now over, Silva is likely to turn his attention back to the Premier League schedule while assessing the squad’s ability to cope with the demands of a congested fixture list.
