Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has warned his teammates against getting complacent in the race for a Premier League top four finish after narrowly edging past 10-man Crystal Palace on Sunday.
The Red Devils displayed great spirit and determination at Old Trafford as they battled back from a goal down to emerge 2-1 victors over The Eagles.
Crystal Palace struck early as Maxence Lacroix powered home a header from Brennan Johnson’s corner, but Manchester United turned the game after the break.
Lacroix conceded a penalty and was sent off after a VAR review for hauling down Matheus Cunha, allowing Bruno Fernandes to equalise from the spot.
The United captain then created the winner with a deep cross that Benjamin Sesko headed home to seal a well-deserved comeback victory for Michael Carrick’s side.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Fernandes expressed delight with the performance and victory, but the Man United skipper also took time out to urge his teammates against complacency of any kind.
“It feels like a big result, we were behind and had to show some character,” he told Sky Sports.
“We were a little bit slow with the ball, but it was a good three points, and that is the aim.
“There are a lot of games to go still, and it is important that we don’t feel that we are in the position that we need to be. We need to make as many points as we can.”
The win over Crystal Palace was Manchester United’s fourth consecutive win at Old Trafford and sixth in seven Premier League outings since taking over from Ruben Amorim.
Man United also leapfrogged Aston Villa to climb up to third place on the Premier League table, further boosting their hopes of finishing in the top four and securing UEFA Champions League football for next season.
The Red Devils will be looking to continue their incredible league run and make it seven wins from eight PL matches when they face Eddie Howe’s unpredictable Newcastle United in a mid-week clash at St. James’ Park.
