Manchester United‘s interim manager, Michael Carrick, has subtly hinted at the possibility of experienced English defender Harry Maguire remaining at Old Trafford beyond the end of the ongoing Premier League season.
Maguire is currently in the last four months of his contract with the Red Devils, and there are growing concerns among the fan base that the England international could be departing the club in the same summer as Casemiro, who already announced his imminent departure at the start of February.
The mounting concerns are understandable, given that Maguire has now established himself as one of Manchester United’s most reliable centre-backs since Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim as manager at the start of 2026.
Under Michael Carrick, Man United are currently on an impressive run of seven Premier League games without a defeat (6W, 1D), and Maguire has featured in the starting XI for all of these games while also making significant contributions for the Red Devils.
Addressing concerns about the England international’s future at Old Trafford ahead of facing Crystal Palace in the Premier League, Carrick hinted at the possibility of Maguire signing a new deal after admitting that the Red Devils needed his experience.
“Harry’s an impressive character. He’s had a great career so far, and hopefully there’s a lot more to come,” he said, per quotes revealed by Tribal Football.
“I think in what he’s been here and the journey and the experiences that he’s had certainly since he’s been here and with England as well, I think show exactly what he is.
“Within the squad, there is that balance, you want that younger potential and excitement, but you need the sweet spot in the middle with players at the peak, and experience is massive.”
With only four months remaining until the end of the season, Manchester United will be aware of the need to move quickly to avoid losing one of their most reliable squad members for free in the summer.
Maguire’s future at Old Trafford is uncertain at the moment, but the defender, who rebuffed an already agreed move to West Ham United in the summer of 2023 despite being out of favour at the time, has proven himself a loyal soldier over time.
