Aston Villa have joined the race for the signature of Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford, according to TeamTalk.
The England international is keen to leave the Cityzens after becoming increasingly frustrated by his lack of playing time this season.
The 23-year-old had only rejoined City last summer in a £27 million move from Burnley, having originally come through the club’s youth system.
However, the return has not gone as planned, as he has been playing second fiddle to Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who also arrived at the club during the same transfer window.
Although Trafford started Manchester City’s first three Premier League games of the season, he has only been used in domestic cup competitions since, while also making a single appearance in the UEFA Champions League.
Aston Villa have now emerged as serious contenders for his signature, particularly with uncertainty surrounding the future of first-choice goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and would be prepared to bring Trafford to Villa Park if the Argentine goalkeeper leaves.
However, Villa are not the only club interested in making a move for the 23-year-old. As per earlier reports, Leeds United are also monitoring the situation as they look to resolve their goalkeeping issues ahead of next season.
Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United have also registered their interest in Trafford’s signature, with the latter keen on making him the long-term replacement for Nick Pope.
Trafford will be determined to choose his next destination carefully to avoid a repeat of his current situation.
However, Aston Villa stands out as an attractive option, with the prospect of regular first-team football and a potential involvement in the UEFA Champions League.
