Arsenal have shut down Real Madrid’s attempts to sign Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhaes, with sources confirming that the Spanish giants were told there is no chance of prising the centre-back away from the Emirates.
Real Madrid reportedly made discreet enquiries through intermediaries as they look to address a deteriorating defensive situation at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba are both on the wrong side of 30, and Eder Militao has spent the better part of three years lurching from one serious injury to the next.
A new centre-back has become something of an urgent matter. TEAMtalk, however, reports that Arsenal were not interested in the conversation.
It is the second time in recent memory that Real Madrid have been turned away by Arsenal over a central defender.
They tested the waters over William Saliba ahead of last summer’s window, even proposing a swap deal involving Rodrygo, and were similarly rebuffed.
The France international subsequently signed a new deal keeping him in north London until 2030.
Gabriel himself committed his future to the club last July, when sporting director Andrea Berta made his extension one of the first pieces of business after arriving.
It was part of a broader strategy that has also seen Bukayo Saka tied down long-term. The 28-year-old has been central to that ambition.
His partnership with Saliba is seen as one of the best centre-back pairings in world football right now, and he has scored against all five of Arsenal’s traditional rivals (Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea) in recent seasons.
