Onana determined to reclaim Manchester United’s number one shirt

Andre Onana

Andre Onana wants to return to Manchester United when his loan at Trabzonspor ends and fight for the number one shirt, but the Premier League club are not exactly on the same page.

The Cameroonian joined United from Inter Milan for £43 million in the summer of 2023 under Erik ten Hag, but his time at Old Trafford never really took off.

He made too many mistakes, and a Carabao Cup penalty shootout defeat to League Two side Grimsby Town, in which he was at fault more than once, said everything about where the club was at the time.

Ruben Amorim, who replaced ten Hag, eventually ran out of patience and brought in Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for £18 million last summer. Onana was shipped out to Trabzonspor on loan a month later.

The 29-year-old’s loan in Turkey has not particularly gone well either. He has kept just four clean sheets in 21 appearances, conceding 32 goals in the process, and Trabzonspor have no intention of making the deal permanent. His contract at United runs until 2028.

According to The Guardian, Onana wants to report for pre-season and fight for the starting spot when his loan expires in May.

United’s own stance, however, is different. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed earlier this month that the club do not plan to continue with Onana beyond this season.

The gap between what Onana believes and what United plans to do with him makes for an awkward few months ahead.
