Fresh setback for Alphonso Davies as Bayern confirm injury

Canada captain Alphonso Davies was forced off with a hamstring injury during Bayern Munich’s 3-2 Bundesliga win over Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, casting a shadow over an otherwise hard-fought afternoon for the German champions.

The 25-year-old left-back pulled up early in the second half and left the pitch visibly devastated,  briefly covering his face with his shirt as he made his way toward the tunnel. It was a worrying sight, particularly with the World Cup now less than four months away.

Bayern later confirmed that Davies has sustained a tear in his right hamstring and will be sidelined for the time being.

Despite the initial concern, Davies was able to walk off without assistance, something for the Bavarian faithful to cling to on a sour afternoon.

Head coach Vincent Kompany was cautiously hopeful after the match, suggesting the injury may not prove long-term.

“It doesn’t look too bad,” Kompany said. “I don’t know if it’s two weeks or four, but I have the feeling it won’t be too long. These situations can happen when players are building back up.”

Davies has endured a stop-start campaign,  making just eight league appearances this season following a serious knee injury suffered while on international duties last March. That injury, which involved ligament damage, kept him out for nearly nine months.

Having worked his way back from his knee problem, the sight of him slowing to a stop again felt cruelly familiar.

Bayern have managed his minutes carefully so far, mindful of his importance for the team and particularly wary of a relapse, but the latest setback interrupts what had begun to look like a steady return to rhythm.

With Canada set to co-host the 2026 World Cup alongside the United States and Mexico, any long-term absence would mean a significant blow for both club and country.

Bayern await further medical assessment,  and Canada will be hoping their captain’s latest setback eventually proves only to be temporary.

However, for a player whose game relies heavily on pace and acceleration,  any hamstring issue will require patience.
