Tottenham Hotspur have joined the race to sign Darwin Nunez from Al Hilal amid interest from Premier League rivals Newcastle United.
The 26-year-old left Liverpool last summer after a disappointing spell and moved to Saudi Arabia in a deal worth up to £56.6 million, but could be set for a return to Europe after just a season.
Nunez has struggled to establish himself as Al Hilal’s main striker, even after Serbian forward Aleksandar Mitrovic left the club.
He has scored nine goals from 24 appearances across all competitions, but was deemed surplus to requirements following the arrival of Karim Benzema from Al Ittihad during the winter transfer window.
Al Hilal head coach Simone Inzaghi also recently left the Uruguayan forward out of the club’s 25-man squad for the rest of the Saudi league season, raising further questions about his future.
According to TeamTalk, both Tottenham and Newcastle are monitoring the situation and are ready to make a move in the summer.
Spurs are looking to strengthen their attack at the end of the season and have identified Nunez as a decent option due to his Premier League experience.
As we earlier reported, the Europa League champions are also monitoring Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic and former Brentford striker Ivan Toney.
Newcastle United, meanwhile, are also expected to look for attacking reinforcements, with Nick Woltemade struggling for consistency and Yoane Wissa dealing with fitness concerns.
A return to the Premier League would appeal to Nunez, giving him another opportunity to compete at the top-level, but any move would likely depend on him accepting a significant pay cut from his current wages.
