Former Arsenal defender Oleksandr Zinchenko has suffered a major setback after Ajax confirmed he sustained a potentially season-ending injury.
The Dutch giants had been in high spirits following their 4-1 victory over Fortuna Sittard at the weekend.
However, celebrations were short-lived after Zinchenko was forced off just six minutes into his second appearance for the club.
The Ukrainian international only joined Ajax during the recent transfer window, with hopes high that his experience and quality would boost their push for a top-two finish in the Eredivisie. Unfortunately, that ambition has now taken a hit.
Zinchenko had endured a mixed campaign before his move. He made 10 appearances during a loan spell at Nottingham Forest before returning to Arsenal to finalise his switch to Ajax in search of regular first-team football.
The move was also seen as crucial preparation ahead of Ukraine’s 2026 World Cup qualification fixtures.
Now, the 29-year-old is expected to miss Ukraine’s upcoming qualifier against Sweden at the end of March, a significant blow for his national side. Graham Potter’s Sweden will pose a stern test, and Ukraine must now prepare without one of their most experienced players.
Should Ukraine overcome Sweden, they will face either Poland or Albania in the decisive play-off for a place at the World Cup this summer.
For Zinchenko, the focus will now shift to recovery, with both Ajax and Ukraine hoping he can return stronger next season.
