Thomas Tuchel is set to sign a contract extension that will keep him in charge of England until after the 2028 European Championship, according to reports from BBC Sport.

The former Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea manager took over as head coach of the Three Lions in January 2025.

He replaced interim boss Lee Carsley, who had been in charge following Gareth Southgate’s resignation after England’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

The 52-year-old initially agreed to an 18-month deal that was due to expire after the upcoming FIFA World Cup, but is now expected to commit to a further two years until 2028.

Since taking charge, Tuchel has enjoyed an impressive start with the national team. England cruised through their World Cup qualifying campaign, winning all eight matches while scoring 22 goals and conceding none.

Overall, the German has overseen 10 matches, with his only defeat coming in a 3-1 loss to Senegal in June 2025.

Tuchel will now lead England into Euro 2028, which will be co-hosted alongside Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland.

The 52-year-old is also expected to attend the draw for the 2026-27 UEFA Nations League scheduled for later this evening.

Premier League clubs Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur had been monitoring Tuchel’s situation and were hopeful of tempting him back into club management in the summer, if he decided against renewing his contract, as they continue their search for permanent managers.

With his future now sorted, the 52-year-old’s full attention will shift to the upcoming World Cup, where he will be tasked with ending England’s 60-year wait for a major trophy. The Three Lions will begin their campaign against Croatia on June 17, before also facing Ghana and Panama in Group L.
