European Super League ends as Real Madrid reach agreement with UEFA

Real Madrid and UEFA have reached an “agreement of principles” that effectively ends the European Super League project, the Spanish club and European football authorities confirmed on Wednesday. Real Madrid published the details of the agreement in an official statement on the club’s website.

The agreement, reached after months of discussions between Real Madrid, UEFA, and the European Football Club (EFC), is aimed at safeguarding the long-term sustainability of European club football while respecting sporting merit and protecting the fan experience through technology.

According to the joint statement, the agreement will also serve to resolve the ongoing legal dispute related to the proposed Super League once its principles are fully implemented.

Real Madrid had been the only one of the 12 founding clubs remaining committed to the Super League after Barcelona announced its withdrawal on Saturday.

The project, which was first launched in 2021, faced widespread backlash and criticism from UEFA, domestic leagues, and supporters across Europe.

Previously, Los Blancos president Florentino Pérez had threatened to seek substantial damages from UEFA over the cancellation of the project, insisting in November 2025 that the club was “more convinced than ever” of securing a legal victory.
