Manchester City’s pursuit of defensive reinforcement has taken a new turn, with Pep Guardiola now understood to be personally backing a move for Roma wing-back Wesley.

City had previously explored options in the market before turning their focus elsewhere,  but sources in South America now claim Guardiola has revived interest in the 22-year-old after tracking his development in Serie A.

Reports have it that the City manager is a long-time admirer of Wesley’s game and has asked recruitment staff to keep the Brazilian closely monitored.

What was once seen as an affordable deal would now require a far bigger investment, but those close to the situation say Guardiola sees Wesley as a long-term project rather than a short-term fix.

Wesley’s rise has been quite rapid. He began his youth career at Tubarão-SC before moving into Flamengo’s academy setup in 2021.

After making his senior debut later that year, he became a first-team regular by 2023, collecting major honours along the way, including the Brazilian League title, the Copa do Brasil and the Copa Libertadores. He would go on to surpass 100 senior appearances for the club.

Since joining Roma, he has been used primarily as a wing-back across both flanks, starting 24 matches in all competitions and earning praise for his athleticism,  recovery speed and ability to carry the ball under pressure.

City’s interest in the youngster comes amid plans to strengthen the right side of defence this summer. Manchester City director of Football Hugo Viana, is overseeing a list that also includes Newcastle’s Tino Livramento, Brentford’s Michael Kayode and Feyenoord’s Givairo Read.

Wesley has now become a prominent figure on the list,  especially now that Pep Guardiola has endorsed his pursuit.
