Chelsea have entered the race to sign Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, with the club now holding talks with the player’s representatives as they assess options ahead of the summer window.
The 26-year-old has attracted interest from several top sides, including Arsenal and Barcelona, but Chelsea are now positioning themselves as a serious contender.
According to reports, Alvarez’s agents were in London last week and attended the Carabao Cup meeting between Chelsea and Arsenal, where talks are believed to have taken place regarding a possible move.
Atletico are understood to value the Argentine International at around £90 million. While the fee is seen to be on the high side, it is viewed as realistic for a player of Alvarez’s profile and experience, particularly given his proven record at both club and international level.
Chelsea’s renewed focus on a centre-forward comes after an inconsistent season from their current striker options.
Liam Delap has struggled for fitness and form following his move last summer, while Nicolas Jackson is expected to be moved on once he returns from his loan spell.
With changes imminent in attacking positions, signing a new No.9 has become incumbent for the club.
Although Alvarez has not been prolific in the league this season, his overall contribution remains worthy of attraction.
Across the last 18 months, he has averaged a goal or assist every 1.68 games for Atletico, a side that places more emphasis on defensive security over attacking volume.
With multiple clubs monitoring Alvarez’s situation, competition is expected to grow stiffer, but Chelsea’s early engagement suggests they are preparing to move quickly should an opportunity arise.
