Record Scottish champions Celtic are in advanced negotiations to sign former Arsenal and Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on a free transfer, according to Sky Sports.
Negotiations progressed after interim manager Martin O’Neill publicly expressed admiration and desire to bring the player to Glasgow earlier this week.
Oxlade-Chamberlain has been without a club since August 2025 after terminating his contract at Turkish outfit Besiktas. The 32-year-old has been training with Arsenal to maintain fitness and recently featured for the club’s Under-21 side in a behind-closed-doors friendly match.
The England international left Arsenal in 2017 to join Liverpool, where his spell was heavily disrupted by injuries. Despite those setbacks, he won one English Premier League title, as well as the UEFA Champions League title, before leaving the Reds to join Besiktas in 2023.
However, injuries limited his impact once again, and he scored just five times from 50 appearances across all competitions for the Turkish club before agreeing to a mutual termination of his contract last summer.
Celtic view Oxlade-Chamberlain as an important addition given his experience, which they believe would help them in their three-way title race alongside Hearts and Rangers. The Hoops are also working in time to complete the deal before 11 pm tonight, as they intend to register the player for the knockout rounds of the UEFA Europa League.
If the move is finalised in time, Oxlade-Chamberlain would become Celtic’s sixth signing of the year and could be in contention to feature against German side Stuttgart in their Europa League play-off clash later in the month.
