Portuguese midfielder Ruben Neves has signed a contract extension with Saudi Arabian giants Al Hilal until 2029,  bringing an end to speculation over a possible return to Europe, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Neves joined Al Hilal in a £47 million deal from Wolves in 2023 as part of the wave of high-profile arrivals to the Saudi Pro League during that period and has gone ahead to score 18 times and register 30 assists in 115 appearances across all competitions.

The 28-year-old was approaching the final months of his contract, which had alerted several European giants, including Manchester United and Arsenal.

The former Wolves captain was keen on a return to Europe during last month’s transfer window, but has now committed his future to the Saudi giants. Manchester United explored the possibility of signing him on loan until the end of the season, but were unsuccessful in their attempt.

The Red Devils had hoped to sign him for free at the end of the season, especially with Brazilian midfielder Casemiro set to leave the club, but will now turn their attention to other transfer targets with a deal off the table.

Arsenal also made a late attempt to sign the 28-year-old as earlier reported after an injury to Mikel Merino, but the move failed to materialise before the window closed.

After playing a key role in Al Hilal’s league success in his debut season, Neves will turn his attention to helping the club reclaim the championship from defending champions Al Ittihad, with 15 matches left to play this season.
